Read slowly: Acts 11:22–26. Notice Barnabas's first response to the new community in Antioch.
When Barnabas arrives, he sees the grace of God and is glad. He encourages the believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Then he seeks Saul's help, and together they teach the growing community.
Barnabas does not need to be the person who began the work in order to delight in it. He can recognize grace, strengthen what is already happening, and invite another gifted person to participate.
That generosity can be difficult when another person's growth awakens comparison. We may notice what is missing before acknowledging what is good, or withhold encouragement because we did not receive similar support ourselves. The desire to protect our place can make us slow to celebrate God's work elsewhere.
Barnabas offers a different response. His gladness becomes useful care: encouragement, sustained teaching, and shared responsibility. He neither flatters the community nor competes with it. He helps it become more firmly rooted in the Lord.
There is freedom in being grateful for good work that does not need our name attached to it.
Ponder: Whose growth could I celebrate more freely if I set comparison aside?
Practice: Give one specific word of encouragement today. Name the good you have seen and, if appropriate, offer practical support for it.
Carry This with You: You can strengthen God's work without needing to be its center.
Prayer: Lord, make me glad when others grow in Your grace. Free me from comparison and teach me to encourage what You are forming in them. Amen.
