Begin with who Jesus is.
Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God, who became human and lived among us. He showed God's character in his words, his compassion, and his actions. He came into a world marked by sin and suffering to bring us back to God.
God's love is the starting point. You do not have to become impressive, religious, or put together before you can approach him. John 3:16-17 tells us that God sent his Son so that people who believe in him could receive life.
Understand why we need him.
Sin is more than a mistake or a bad habit. It is our turning away from God, expressed in what we do, what we desire, and the good we leave undone. We all need forgiveness and a life we cannot give ourselves.
The good news is that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead. His resurrection means death did not have the final word. Our hope rests on what he has done. Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
Ephesians 2:8-10 explains that salvation is God's gift, received through faith. Good works grow from that new life; they are not the price of admission.
Turn to him and trust him.
Jesus calls people to repent and believe the good news (Mark 1:14-15). Repentance means turning away from sin and toward God. It begins with honesty: admitting your need and becoming willing to follow his direction. It does not mean you will suddenly stop struggling.
Faith means relying on Jesus: trusting that he died and rose for you, receiving his forgiveness, and acknowledging him as Lord. You can bring questions as you take that step. Romans 10:9-13 connects faith in the risen Jesus with confessing him as Lord and calling on him for salvation.
You can speak to him now.
Prayer is a way to express your response to God. There is no special wording that earns salvation. If these words express what you mean, you could pray:
Jesus, I need your forgiveness. I have sinned and cannot make myself right with God. I believe you died for my sins and rose again. I turn to you and trust you. Teach me to follow you as Lord. Help me take my next step with you. Amen.
The hope is in Jesus, not in saying a prayer perfectly or feeling a particular emotion. If you are still unsure, tell him that honestly and keep exploring what Scripture says about him.
Take your next step with others.
Following Jesus is a life to grow into. Begin reading the Gospels, speak with God in prayer, and seek a local church that teaches the Bible and centers its life on Jesus. Tell a pastor or a mature Christian about your questions and your desire to follow him.
Ask about baptism and joining the life of the church. Jesus connects making disciples with baptism and learning to obey his teaching (Matthew 28:18-20). You do not have to figure out every next step alone.
