The believers in Antioch are worshiping and fasting when the Holy Spirit calls Barnabas and Saul for a new work. The community responds with further prayer, lays hands on them, and sends them.
These are valuable people to release. Their departure will change the local community's life. Yet the church recognizes that God's work extends beyond its own immediate needs and comfort.
We may not receive the same assignment, but we can recognize the question of availability. A useful skill, a season of time, or a trusted relationship can become something we hold too tightly. We may be willing to serve as long as service leaves our preferred arrangements untouched.
Antioch's response grows out of worship and shared discernment. It is not restless activity for its own sake. The people attend to God, consider the work, and support those who go. Faithful availability can include accepting a responsibility or helping someone else fulfill one.
Our place in God's work may involve going, sending, giving, or making room for another person's calling.
Ponder: What am I holding so tightly that I have stopped asking how it might serve beyond my own circle?
Practice: Bring one responsibility or resource into prayer today. Consider one concrete way it could support another person's faithful work.
Carry This with You: What God gives you can become a gift beyond your immediate circle.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, make me attentive and available. Help me recognize the work before me and support others with generosity when their calling leads them onward. Amen.
