Read slowly: Acts 15:6–11. Notice Peter's answer to the question of Gentile belonging.
Some believers insist that Gentiles must be circumcised to be saved. Peter recalls that God has given them the Holy Spirit and cleansed their hearts by faith. Jewish and Gentile believers alike depend on the grace of Jesus.
The argument concerns a particular question in the first church, but it exposes a continuing temptation. We can quietly make our own customs feel like conditions of acceptance. People may hear that Jesus welcomes them while sensing that they must first become more like us.
Grace does not make truth or holy living unimportant. It establishes the basis of our belonging: God's gift through Jesus. From that shared place, people can learn, repent, and grow together.
In everyday relationships, we can examine the extra burdens we attach to welcome. Do we make room for a different background, a less familiar way of expressing gratitude, or someone still learning the vocabulary? The patience we offer should reflect the mercy on which we ourselves depend.
Peter's words place everyone under the same grace. That is a humbling and generous place to stand.
Ponder: What personal preference have I begun treating as a measure of someone else's belonging?
Practice: Identify one unnecessary expectation you can release. Make one act of welcome that does not require another person to mirror your habits first.
Carry This with You: The grace that receives you also teaches you how to receive others.
Prayer: Jesus, keep Your gift at the center of my faith. Help me distinguish Your truth from my preferences and welcome others with humble love. Amen.
