Read slowly: Acts 20:28–32. Notice where Paul begins his instruction to the elders.
He tells them to pay careful attention to themselves and to the flock. Their responsibility for other people does not remove the need to examine their own lives. The church belongs to God, and their care must remain accountable to Him.
Those words are addressed to leaders, but the order is useful wherever we carry responsibility. Parents, teachers, managers, and friends can become so focused on what others need to change that they stop noticing their own habits.
Influence magnifies the effects of an unattended motive. Impatience, a need for control, or hunger for approval may shape our guidance before we recognize it. Self-examination helps keep care from becoming a way of protecting ourselves.
Paul also commends the elders to God and the word of His grace. They are not expected to sustain the community by their own strength. Their first responsibility includes remaining teachable before the same Lord they want others to follow.
A quiet return to prayer and Scripture can be part of caring well for the people who depend on us.
Ponder: What habit in my own life deserves attention before I correct it in someone else?
Practice: Set aside a few unhurried minutes to examine one recurring response. Ask God for honesty, and choose one small change you can begin today.
Carry This with You: Responsible care includes the life of the person giving it.
Prayer: Father, keep my motives open before You. Help me lead and care with humility, receiving Your correction as readily as I offer guidance to others. Amen.
