The charges against Paul cannot be proved. Yet Festus, wanting to do the accusers a favor, asks whether Paul will go to Jerusalem for trial. Paul refuses to be handed over on unsupported charges and appeals to Caesar.
The governor's desire for approval threatens another person's fair treatment. What may appear to him as a useful accommodation carries serious consequences for the person with less power.
We exercise smaller forms of influence every day. We may assign work, hear a complaint, recommend someone, or decide whose account receives attention. The wish to please an influential person can quietly tilt our judgment before we admit what is happening.
Fairness asks us to slow down and attend to evidence, responsibilities, and the person affected. It may require a courteous answer that disappoints someone whose favor we would like to keep.
Paul's situation reminds us that an individual is never merely a convenient way to settle competing pressures. Whatever authority we hold is an opportunity to protect fair treatment.
Ponder: Whose approval could be influencing a decision I need to make fairly?
Practice: Before that decision, write down the relevant facts and the standard you would apply if nobody's favor were at stake.
Carry This with You: Let truth and fairness weigh more than the advantage of being liked.
Prayer: God, keep my judgment honest. Help me use influence to serve what is right and protect people who may bear the cost of my desire for approval. Amen.
