Read slowly: Acts 9:20–31. Notice Barnabas's part when Saul reaches Jerusalem.
Saul has begun proclaiming Jesus, but the disciples in Jerusalem fear him. They know his history of persecution and do not believe that he has truly become a disciple. Their concern has a serious basis.
Barnabas brings Saul to the apostles and explains what happened. He helps the community hear evidence of a changed life. His advocacy makes room for Saul without pretending that the past never existed.
There are times when someone needs another person's trustworthy help to be understood. A newcomer may have gifts nobody has noticed. A person who has changed may need the chance to demonstrate that change. Someone's account may never receive a fair hearing unless a respected person helps bring it forward.
Barnabas's example calls for informed care, not indiscriminate endorsement. We should not pressure vulnerable people to ignore danger or vouch for what we do not know. We can speak honestly about what we have actually seen and help a community make a fair judgment.
An introduction, a clear account, or a thoughtful invitation can become an important act of welcome.
Ponder: Is there someone whose real contribution or growth I could help others recognize?
Practice: Offer one honest introduction or word of support based on what you personally know. Be specific rather than extravagant.
Carry This with You: Use the trust you have earned to help another person receive a fair hearing.
Prayer: Father, give me Barnabas's generosity and sound judgment. Help me recognize Your grace and speak truthfully for people who need a place to begin. Amen.
