Make Room for Prayer

2 min readScripture · Reflection · Prayer

Read Luke 5:15–16. Notice what Jesus does while reports about him spread and more people gather to hear him and be healed.

The needs around him are real. People are coming because he teaches and restores. Alongside that growing demand, Luke describes Jesus withdrawing to deserted places for prayer. The wording presents a recurring practice within his ministry.

Guzik draws attention to the way increasing demands remain connected with prayer in this scene.1 Jesus' care for people does not make communion with God unnecessary. He continues to give time and attention to the Father while living among the needs of others.

We may recognize the pressure to keep responding until there is nothing left to give. Prayer offers a place to bring those responsibilities before God: the person we hope to help, the decision we cannot yet settle, or the weariness we have been carrying. We can ask for wisdom and strength while acknowledging that another person's good does not depend entirely on us.

Ponder: Which responsibility would you like to bring to God before responding to its next demand?

Practice: Before one demanding task or conversation today, take a quiet moment to name the person or need before God and ask for help in responding faithfully.

Carry This with You: Make room for prayer within the life you are already called to live.

Prayer: Father, receive the needs and responsibilities I bring to you. Give me wisdom, compassion, and strength for what is mine to do. Help me keep returning to you while I care for others. Amen.
