Wisdom for Everyday Life
Read: Mark 10:46–52
Bartimaeus sits beside the road as Jesus passes with a crowd. When he calls out for mercy, many tell him to be silent.
Jesus stops. He tells them to call Bartimaeus, and the message around him changes: take heart, get up, Jesus is calling. When Bartimaeus comes, Jesus asks what he wants him to do. He gives the man room to answer in his own words. Bartimaeus asks to recover his sight, receives healing, and follows him.
Jesus' attention helps us understand the service he has just taught his disciples. The person beside the road matters enough to stop for. A crowd moving toward an important destination can still need correction in how it receives one person's appeal.
We can recognize that tension in a busy day. Someone begins describing a difficulty, and we are already thinking about the next task or preparing an answer. A moment of attention can change the encounter. We can listen long enough to understand the need instead of deciding in advance what the person should ask for.
Ponder: Whose voice has been difficult for me to hear amid the demands of the day?
Practice: Give one person an unhurried opportunity to explain a concern. Ask what kind of help would be useful, then listen before offering a response.
Carry This with You
Make room to hear the need. Attentive care begins by receiving the person who is speaking.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me notice the people I am tempted to pass by. Give me patience to listen and wisdom to offer care that responds to the need before me. Amen.
