Bring the Grudge into Prayer

Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Mark 11:25

Jesus has been teaching his disciples to trust God when they pray. Then he brings another person into the conversation: someone against whom they are holding a grievance. Even while standing in prayer, they are to forgive. Asking their Father for mercy belongs with extending mercy to others.

That connection is easy to miss when prayer has become a list of things we need. A remembered slight may be shaping our thoughts while we ask God to help with everything else. We rehearse what was said, prepare a cutting response, or hope the other person will feel the hurt we felt. Jesus invites that part of life into the Father's presence too.

Forgiveness begins with telling the truth about the wrong and relinquishing our claim to revenge. It need not mean that hurt has disappeared or trust has already been rebuilt. We can ask for help to forgive when our feelings are still unsettled. The command gives prayer a direction: receiving God's mercy must change the way we carry another person's offense.

Ponder: Is there a grievance I keep rehearsing that I could bring honestly before the Father?

Practice: Name the hurt in prayer. Ask God to help you release the wish to repay it, and pray for what is good and right for everyone involved.

Carry This with You

The mercy you seek from the Father can reach the grievance you carry into prayer.

A Prayer

Father, you know the wrongs that have hurt me and the ways I need forgiveness myself. Help me receive your mercy and extend it. Turn me from revenge, and guide me toward what is truthful, just, and peaceable. Amen.
