Wisdom for Everyday Life
Read: Mark 13:32–37
Jesus tells his disciples that they do not know the day or hour. Then he gives them a picture: a man leaves his household in his servants' charge, each with work to do, while the doorkeeper must stay awake. Readiness includes attending to what has been entrusted to them.
The uncertainty does not leave them without direction. They cannot choose the time of the master's arrival, but they can be faithful while they wait. Jesus ends by extending the instruction to everyone: stay awake. His followers are to live in expectation of him, with attention to the responsibilities he has given them.
That helps us understand watchfulness in an ordinary day. Concern about the future can absorb our attention until the person beside us or the responsibility before us becomes easy to neglect. Jesus' picture draws us back to entrusted care. A conversation that needs honesty, a person who needs patient attention, or a promise we need to honor can become a place to serve him faithfully. We do not need to know the whole future to recognize that next response.
Ponder: What person or responsibility needs my faithful attention while I am preoccupied with what might happen next?
Practice: Bring one uncertainty to Jesus in prayer. Then give unhurried attention to one responsibility or person already entrusted to your care.
Carry This with You
Keep watch by remaining ready for Jesus and faithful in the care before you.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me trust you with the time I cannot know. Keep my hope awake, and give me patience and attention for the people and responsibilities you have entrusted to me. Amen.
