Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Mark 4:26–29

Jesus describes God's kingdom through a man who scatters seed. The man sleeps and rises as days pass. Meanwhile, the seed sprouts and grows in a way he cannot explain. A blade appears, then an ear, then full grain. When the crop is ripe, he harvests it.

The sower matters. He plants and later gathers the crop. Yet growth continues while he sleeps. Jesus gives us a picture of God's reign that leaves room for faithful work and for processes beyond our control. The farmer's inability to produce life does not make his planting pointless.

We may need that distinction when helping someone learn about Jesus. We explain a passage, pray, and make time for a conversation, then worry because we cannot measure what changed. Impatience can turn care into pressure. We begin demanding an answer when the other person still needs time to consider what they have heard.

The parable invites patient confidence in God's work. We can attend to our part without treating another person's response as something we can manufacture. Sleeping need not mean indifference; in Jesus' picture, the seed keeps growing through the ordinary rhythm of day and night.

Ponder: Where am I trying to control a response that belongs beyond my faithful part?

Practice: In one conversation about faith, offer a clear, patient explanation, then give the other person room to reflect. Pray for them without pressing for an immediate result.
