Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Mark 5:18–20

After Jesus frees him from the spirits that had tormented him, a man begs to travel with him. Jesus gives him a different place to begin: home, among his friends. He is to tell how much the Lord has done for him and how he has received mercy.

The man goes and speaks about what Jesus has done. His calling grows out of care he has received. He does not have to make himself the hero of the account. The reason to speak is gratitude for the One who helped him.

We may hesitate to speak about faith because we think our words must be impressive or our understanding complete. This encounter offers a more ordinary beginning. We can tell the truth about a mercy we recognize: forgiveness we needed, help to admit a wrong, or strength to receive care during a difficult season. Our story can be modest and still direct attention to Jesus.

The man's commission is particular to him, but its emphasis helps us consider our own conversations. People we already know may be the people with whom we can speak most naturally. Honest gratitude gives them something concrete to hear, while leaving room for their questions.

Ponder: What mercy from Jesus could I describe simply and truthfully to someone I know?

Practice: When a fitting conversation arises, share one specific way you are grateful for Jesus' care. Keep the account honest, and listen to the other person's response.
