Wisdom for Everyday Life
Read: Mark 6:30–32
The apostles return to Jesus and tell him what they have done and taught. People are constantly coming and going. The demands have become so steady that the disciples do not have time even to eat.
Jesus notices. He invites them to come away to a quiet place and rest a while. He receives the people doing the work with the same care that marks his ministry to others. Their need for food and rest belongs within his concern.
We can become accustomed to treating our own limits as an inconvenience to everyone else. A meal is postponed, a break disappears, and there is always another request that seems reasonable on its own. After a while, the whole pattern leaves little room to receive care ourselves.
Jesus' invitation gives us a reason to notice that pattern. Service does not make us people without bodies or limits. We can bring him both the work we have done and the weariness that has come with it. Rest can be part of following the One who cares for us.
Ponder: Where have ordinary needs, such as eating or resting, been repeatedly crowded out of my day?
Practice: Protect one small period today for an unhurried meal or quiet rest. If necessary, let someone know when you will be available again.
Carry This with You
The person doing the caring also needs care. Receive Jesus' invitation to rest a while.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me recognize my limits and receive your care. Give me wisdom to serve faithfully and make room for the rest I need. Amen.
