Wisdom for Everyday Life
Read: Mark 7:9–13
Jesus describes a person whose parents could have benefited from resources he possesses. But those resources have been declared Corban, meaning given to God. The religious tradition then prevents him from using them to help his father or mother.
Jesus places this practice beside God's command to honor parents. A sacred designation has become an excuse for withholding ordinary care. The problem is not that generosity toward God matters too much. It is that a human rule has been allowed to cancel a responsibility God has already given.
We may recognize a smaller version of that contradiction. A valued commitment takes so much space that a promised call never happens, practical help is repeatedly postponed, or someone depending on us receives only the time left over. The activity may be good, while the pattern still needs examination.
This passage invites us to consider whether our devotion reaches the people entrusted to our care. Honoring God can include an appointment arranged, a necessary expense discussed, or a patient conversation about what help is actually needed. Faithfulness becomes visible through attention to real responsibilities.
Ponder: Is a commitment I consider spiritually important crowding out a clear responsibility to someone who depends on me?
Practice: Choose one neglected act of care and take a concrete step today. If the need exceeds what you can provide, begin arranging appropriate help.
Carry This with You
Let devotion deepen the care you give. A religious label cannot make neglect faithful.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me recognize the responsibilities I have avoided. Let my love for you become patient, practical care for the people near me. Amen.
