Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Romans 12:3–8

Paul has asked believers to offer their lives to God. His first example of a renewed mind is surprisingly social: “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought to think.” Grace changes the way we see our own usefulness. It also changes the way we see the person beside us.

Paul pictures the church as one body with members who do different work. Some teach or encourage. Others serve, give, lead, or show mercy. He does not arrange these gifts by prestige. He says that the members belong to one another. A gift received from God is meant to meet a need, not secure a place above someone else.

It is easy to overlook this in an ordinary group. The person who speaks may receive the thanks, while the person who quietly prepares the room, checks on someone, or follows through later goes unnoticed. We may also dismiss our own contribution because it is not visible. Paul asks us to think soberly: name what we can offer without inflating it, and receive another person's gift with gratitude. Mutual dependence gives each of us room to serve.

Ponder: Whose steady contribution have I treated as ordinary enough to overlook?

Practice: Thank that person for one specific act of service. Then offer one gift of your own this week where it answers a real need, without using the response to measure your worth.

Carry This with You

Grace makes gifts useful when we stop ranking them and start sharing them.

Prayer

God of mercy, help me see the gifts you have placed in others and receive them with thanks. Give me an honest view of what I can offer. Make our shared life more generous and less concerned with status. Amen.
