Keep the Debt of Love Open

Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Romans 13:8–10

Some obligations have a clear end. A bill can be paid, a borrowed item returned, a promise fulfilled. Paul has just told the Roman believers to give others what is due. Then he names one debt that remains even after every payment is made: “love each other.”

That could sound exhausting if love were a demand to solve every problem. Paul makes it more concrete. He names commands against adultery, murder, theft, and coveting, then gathers them under the call to love our neighbor as ourselves. Love refuses to treat another person as expendable. It asks whether our conduct protects their good, including when no one is watching. “Love does no wrong to a neighbor” is not only about feeling kindly; it reaches into choices that can betray, take, or injure.

Consider someone whose practical request you have already met. You may have paid what you owed, answered the message, or completed the task. Yet the conversation can still end with impatience or contempt. Paul does not ask us to keep inventing favors to earn God's approval. He asks us to keep seeing a person where we might prefer to see a finished transaction. In Christ, our responsibility to love is not canceled by a checked box.

Ponder: Where have I treated a settled obligation as permission to stop caring about the person involved?

Practice: In one ordinary exchange today, meet what is due and add a small act of attention. Listen without rushing, speak without contempt, or ask how the other person is doing.

Carry This with You

A debt can be paid in full. The call to love your neighbor stays open.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for loving me beyond what I could earn. Help me honor my obligations and keep my heart open to the person before me. Show me how to refuse harm and do good in one real encounter today. Amen.
