Make Room for Another Conscience

Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Romans 14:19

Paul writes to believers who disagree about food and special days. Some feel free to eat; others abstain to honor the Lord. Neither side is asked to pretend that convictions do not matter. Yet both are called to remember that God has welcomed the person across the table. Paul gives them a shared aim: “pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”

That word pursue asks for more than keeping an argument quiet. Peace takes attention. Upbuilding asks whether my words and choices help another person follow Christ. If I have freedom in a matter of conscience, I need not display it at every opportunity. If I have a careful conviction, I need not assume that everyone who differs is careless with God. Both of us answer to the same Lord.

Think of a meal, a holiday, or another practice on which sincere believers differ. It may be possible to state your view clearly and still make room for a person whose conscience leads them elsewhere. This is not a reason to ignore clear harm or wrongdoing. It is a way of treating a fellow believer as someone Christ receives, even while a real disagreement remains.

Ponder: In a current difference of conscience, am I more eager to be seen as right or to help the other person stand before Christ?

Practice: In one conversation this week, ask what matters to the other person before explaining your own practice. Speak honestly, then choose one act of consideration that helps preserve trust.

Carry This with You

Peace grows when conviction is joined to care for the person Christ has welcomed.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep me from contempt and quick judgment. Give me courage to act from conviction and love to make room for another person. Help us build one another up. Amen.
