Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Romans 15:7

Paul speaks to believers who have found reasons to keep one another at a distance. They differ about food, special days, and the practices they associate with faithfulness. He gives them a starting point deeper than agreement: “welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

Christ's welcome comes first. Paul asks them to remember that they are people who have received mercy. Another believer's unfamiliar habits do not erase that shared gift. The person across the table is someone to receive, hear, and help, even when a real difference of conscience remains.

Welcome becomes personal through ordinary attention. At church, we can speak warmly to familiar friends while leaving someone new to find a place alone. We can invite a person into conversation yet offer no room for a different background or a slower pace of understanding. Paul's words ask whether our welcome resembles the welcome we have received from Christ. It has room for patience, curiosity, and care.

There may still be convictions to explain and questions to work through. Receiving a fellow believer does not require pretending these have disappeared. It gives us a way to approach them together, seeking God's glory rather than protecting our own circle.

Ponder: Who might experience Christ's welcome more clearly through the way I make room for them?

Practice: At your next gathering, invite someone beyond your familiar circle into a conversation or a seat beside you. Listen long enough to learn something about them before returning to your usual group.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for receiving me in mercy. Open my eyes to the person I might overlook. Give me a patient, attentive welcome that brings glory to God. Amen.
