Wisdom for Everyday Life

Read: Romans 16:1–2

Paul introduces Phoebe as a sister and a servant of her church. He asks the Roman believers to welcome her and help her with whatever she needs. His reason is personal: she has been a patron of many people, including him. Someone who has given support now needs to receive it.

Paul notices both her service and her present situation. Gratitude becomes more than admiration. The church is asked to make its welcome useful. Phoebe's history of helping others gives them a reason to act, rather than to assume she will always manage on her own.

We can grow accustomed to a reliable person. They prepare the room, make the call, offer hospitality, provide support, or remember who needs attention. Their faithfulness becomes part of what we expect. We may thank them occasionally while forgetting to ask whether they have enough help themselves.

This passage invites a more attentive response. A person who serves is also a person to receive and care for. Supporting them might mean sharing a task, offering a meal during a difficult week, or listening when they need to speak. We honor their work by seeing the person who does it and making room for their needs.

Ponder: Whose steady help have I come to expect without noticing what support they may need?

Practice: Thank one person for a particular act of service you have received. Ask what would be useful to them this week, and offer one form of help you can realistically give.
