Grace

Core definition Grace is God's unearned favor and effective saving gift in Jesus Christ. It is not a wage God owes or a reward for spiritual achievement.

The Greek noun χάρις (charis, G5485) can mean grace, favor, or a gracious gift. Romans presents grace as God's free initiative toward people who cannot establish their own righteousness.

Grace Gives

Romans 3:23–24 says that sinners are justified by God's grace as a gift through the redemption in Christ Jesus. Grace is the source, Christ's saving work is the basis, and faith is the receiving posture.

Grace and wages therefore belong to different orders. Romans 4:4–5 explains that wages create a debt, but God justifies the ungodly through faith. Grace gives what cannot be claimed as payment.

Grace Becomes a Standing

Grace is not only God's kindness at the beginning of the Christian life. Romans 5:1–5 says believers have obtained access into the grace in which they stand. Their relationship with God rests on Christ, not on whether they feel spiritually strong on a given day.

Grace Reigns and Transforms

Romans 5 describes grace as greater than Adam's trespass and as reigning through righteousness toward life. Grace does more than cancel a record. It transfers people from the reign of sin and death into life under Jesus Christ.

That is why Romans 6 rejects the idea that abundant grace makes continued sin harmless. Grace joins believers to Christ and leads toward the practical righteousness and sanctification described in Romans 6:19–22.

What Grace Is Not

• Not divine leniency: God does not call evil good. Christ's cross deals truthfully with sin.
• Not a wage: no religious or moral performance puts God in our debt.
• Not permission to sin: grace breaks sin's claim and creates a new allegiance.
• Not opposed to effort: grace is opposed to earning, but it produces grateful obedience.

How the Four Terms Connect

• Grace is the source and gift.
• Faith receives the gift.
• Justification is God's verdict concerning the believer.
• Righteousness is the right standing given and the right living grace begins to form.
