Receive the Hope That Includes You

2 min readScripture · Reflection · Prayer

Read Mark 16:6–7. Notice who is included when the news of Jesus' resurrection is sent to his followers.

The women have come to the tomb to care for Jesus' body. Instead, a messenger announces that the crucified Jesus has risen. They are to tell his disciples that he will meet them in Galilee, just as he promised. Peter is specifically named. He has denied knowing Jesus, yet the invitation includes him.

That detail gives us a way to think about failure. Peter's denial was serious. Still, the message at the tomb does not leave him to decide whether he belongs among those being called. He is named. The hope offered to him rests on the risen Jesus and his remembered promise.

After a failure, we may try to make ourselves useful enough to approach God again, or stay away because we cannot undo what happened. This scene invites a different beginning: receive the mercy Jesus offers. Honest repentance and repairing harm still matter. They can grow from returning to him rather than from trying to purchase a place in his care.

Ponder: When you have failed, what makes it difficult to receive Christ's invitation to return?

Practice: Bring one failure honestly to Jesus in prayer. Receive his mercy, then take one fitting step of repentance or repair without treating it as payment for his love.

Carry This with You: Your failure calls for honesty; the risen Jesus gives you reason to return with hope.

Prayer: Risen Jesus, help me trust your faithful mercy. Give me honesty about my failures and courage to follow you again. Amen.
